The Governor of Vermont and the Vermont Department of Labor (VDOL) annually recognize Vermont companies that have made outstanding achievements in workplace safety and health. Sponsored by the Governor’s office since 2005, the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Workplace Safety is the highest honor given by the State of Vermont to recognize an employer’s commitment to excellence in workplace safety and health.
Award categories may include: small, medium, and large businesses with recognition of all business sectors including municipalities and agricultural companies. Awards may also include special individual recognitions and added categories, such as most improved.
The VT Department of Labor will announce award recipients during the Vermont Safety and Health Council Expo at the Trader Duke’s Hotel and Conference Center located at 1117 Williston Rd, South Burlington, VT 05403 on Friday, October 12, 2018.
The VT Department of Labor will be accepting nominations for the awards untilSeptember 21, 2018. Any business (owner, manager, supervisor, or employee) may self-nominate their business for this award. Please keep in mind that a workplace is not just in a fixed location, it may be on the roadways, outdoor locations, or a temporary worksite. Previous applicants and former recipients of the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Workplace Safety are also encouraged to apply for this year’s award.
Nominations must be supported by information that demonstrates outstanding workplace safety. Relevant criteria may include:
- Experience modification rate that is better than your industry or sector average.
- Existence of an active safety committee.
- A three-consecutive year history of no work fatalities or catastrophic injuries.
- Additional evidence of notable safety, such as a significant number of days without a recordable injury.
Once an employer has been nominated, VDOL will contact the employer notifying them of their nomination and may request additional documentation that demonstrates that company’s commitment to workplace safety and health.
We encourage nominations for all businesses that deserve this recognition. Nominations must be submitted electronically by September 21 in an email to Leslie Curtis at the Department of Labor-leslie.curtis@vermont.gov
